More On Camden

Situated within our service region, Camden, a suburb in New South Wales, Australia, has a rich history that dates back to its pre-colonial era and continues through its colonial development and into the modern day. Originally, the area was home to the Gandangara people of the Southern Highlands, who called it Benkennie, meaning ‘dry land’. Early European settlers knew the area as the Cowpastures, a name given by Governor Hunter in 1796 after he discovered wild cattle in the region.

In 1805, the area was renamed Camden Park by John Macarthur, a prominent figure in the Australian wool industry. Macarthur played a significant role in the development of Camden, particularly through his sheep rearing ventures. His work in breeding Merino sheep helped establish Australia as a significant wool producer. The town of Camden was surveyed in 1836 and officially became a municipality in 1889.

The early history of the suburb is intertwined with the story of the colony of New South Wales. White settlers first entered the area around 1795, with the discovery of the lost colony’s cattle being a pivotal moment. This discovery led to further exploration and settlement of the region.

By the 1820s, the area witnessed cultural events such as corroborees, indicating some level of coexistence between the settlers and the Aboriginal people. However, by the early 20th century, figures like William Russell, also known as “Werriberrie”, described as the “Chief Man of the Gundungorra Aboriginals of the Burragorang Valley”, were noted as almost the last of their tribe.

Camden’s modern development includes its role in education, with the town hosting research facilities for the veterinary and agricultural schools of the University of Sydney. It also boasts a rich cultural life, exemplified by events like the Camden Show, an annual event that combines amusement park attractions with a state fair atmosphere.

At Leigh’s, we take pride in serving Camden and its surrounds, ensuring that the water tanks of this historic region are maintained to the highest standards, thereby supporting the community’s blend of historical significance and modern-day needs.
